What is Street Food?
Street Food is ready-to-eat food or drinks sold by hawkers, or vendors in a street or other public places such as at a market or fair. You will find that these are often sold from a portable food cart or food truck and meant for immediate consumption.
We class these as both finger food and fast food as street food can be a fast and convenient way to get finger-licking delicious food for a reasonable price.
Street food has become an important part of daily life for the majority as we try to keep up with the pace of hectic lifestyles. Many of the local population struggle to find the time to prepare meals, therefore, we result in going to our favorite local food vendors at lunchtime, knowing that we can get hot or cold freshly made food to satisfy our taste buds and tight time schedule.
Historically, in places such as Greece and Rome, street food was the most common source of food for the urban poor as they didn’t have kitchens in their homes.
In China, the world of street food first developed in the Tang Dynasty and has since then kept evolving and helping shape the Asian cuisine of today on a global scale.
Where can you find Street Food?
Due to the rapid expansion and interest in street food over the years, there are now dedicated street food events popping up all over the country and on any given weekend. They are getting creative with the venues such as on roofs, disused warehouses, and shipping containers, but you will most commonly find these ethnic and flavourful foods at markets, special events, food festivals and on the high street.
